As Producer of Women of The Square Mile, it is vital for me to have a deep understanding of the industry’s current position on diversity and inclusion and how much progress is being made with regard to the role of women. During my research, it was evident that the industry is still very much perceived as a man’s world.
Women account for 23% of board members and just 14% of executive committee members across UK-regulated financial services companies (New Financial Report on Women in UK Financial Services 2016). Too often women are overlooked when it comes to progression. With only 14% of senior positions in our financial services sector being taken up by women, we need to ask ourselves why? More often than not, the response is the culture. A culture that is holding back half of the potential workforce and reducing productivity and returns as a consequence.
‘Spotlight on Diversity Champions’ is a blog series where we show a mutual awareness and celebrate the successful female and male leaders who are advocates of diversity.
These are women who have shattered the glass ceiling and are inspiring others to at least start chipping away at it. They are examples of those who are willing to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions. It’s important to share different understandings of diversity from various viewpoints to create an invaluable discussion on how we can move forward which is why men should not be left out of the conversation.
‘Spotlight on Diversity Champions’ will provide Q&A pieces from diversity champions, thought pieces on the current state of the industry and commentary articles from women working in the industry.
Women of The Square Mile is taking place on Tuesday 27th February 2018 at 8 Northumberland Avenue, London.
